Seeing AI is a free app that narrates the world around you. Designed with and for the blind and low vision community, this ongoing research project harnesses the power of AI to open up the visual world by describing nearby people, text and objects. Seeing AI provides tools to assist with a variety of daily tasks: • Short Text – Speaks text as soon as it appears in front of the camera. • Documents – Provides audio guidance to capture a printed page, and recognizes the text, along with its original formatting. • Products – Scans barcodes, using audio beeps to guide you; hear the name, and package information when available. • People – Saves people’s faces so you can recognize them, and get an estimate of their age, gender, and expression. • Currency – Recognizes currency notes. • Scenes – Hear an overall description of the scene captured. Explore the photo by moving your finger over the screen to hear the location of different objects. • World – An Audio Augmented Reality experience to explore an unfamiliar environment, including hearing objects announced around you with Spatial Audio (requires a device with a LiDAR, and iOS 14+). • Indoor Navigation – Available on the World Channel, enables you to create routes through a building, like “entrance to classroom”, and navigate by following the sound (requires a device with an A9 or later processor, and iOS 14+). • Colors – Identifies colors. • Handwriting – Reads handwritten text like in greeting cards (available in a subset of languages). • Light – Generates an audible tone corresponding to the brightness in the surroundings. • Images in other apps – Just tap “Share” and “Recognize with Seeing AI” to describe images from Mail, Photos, Twitter, and more. • Browse Photos – Hear descriptions of photos saved on your device. KEYBOARD

iDOS provides a PC compatible on-screen keyboard with carefully designed layouts for different devices and orientations. The keyboard has a sliding control in landscape mode so that you can keep it from covering critical part of the screen.

Bluetooth keyboard is fully supported on iOS 14+.

GAMEPAD

iDOS provides a virtual gamepad with key bindings that are fairly common in DOS games. You can customize the bindings. The DPAD works in 8-axis way. It can also be toggled into a joystick.

External bluetooth game controllers are supported. Make sure your game controller is connected (System Settings->Bluetooth). To customize button bindings, go to iDOS in landscape mode, tap on bluetooth icon on the auto-hiding top bar.

MOUSE

The screen area serves as a trackpad for moving mouse pointer.
Tap on the screen for left click. If direct touch is enabled, the mouse pointer will move to where you tap.
Hold one finger on the screen, and tap with another finger for right click.

On-screen mouse buttons are also provided for your convenience.

Bluetooth mouse are fully supported on iOS 14+.

This is a fantastic podcast player, and the push notifications have a unique sound to let the user know that there is a new podcast available. Notifications have been observed to come in when a podcast is posted.

The app is designed with accessibility in mind, though there are a few areas where VoiceOver users may encounter challenges:

  1. Copying Codes:
    When double-tapping on a code, it is automatically copied to your clipboard. However, VoiceOver does not announce this action. The confirmation is visually displayed onscreen, but VoiceOver will only relay this information if you swipe left.
  2. Code Format:
    Codes are presented in the following format: Name, <seconds>, <first 3 digits>, <last 3 digits>.
  • The first value represents the seconds remaining until the code expires.
  • The second value is the first three digits of the code.
  • The third value is the last three digits of the code.
  • Example: For a code displayed as test, 10, 345, 678, “10” indicates 10 seconds remaining before the code expires, “345” is the first part of the code, and “678” is the last part. The full code copied to your clipboard would be 345678.
  1. Accessing Additional Options:
    To access more options for a code, perform a double-tap and hold. Unfortunately, VoiceOver does not read the available options within this context menu and will only announce “Dismiss Context Menu” when swiping.
  • Workaround:
    Enable Screen Recognition, swipe left to select the desired option (the options are clearly labeled), and then double-tap to activate it. Once done, you may disable Screen Recognition and continue using the app as usual.

Overall Accessibility:
The app is generally very accessible. All buttons are labeled, and the interface is clean and easy to navigate.
