iA DemoCast 16: Apple Shortcuts for iOS

Shortcuts app icon

Well, it has been a while since we have had a full DemoCast, but this one is pretty important.

Apple has released their newest version of iOS, which has a new form of automation built in called Siri Shortcuts. They have also released an app called Shortcuts that replaces the app called Workflow.

Shortcuts lets users chain together actions to complete a task, and the best part is that you can add these shortcuts to Siri.

Download the Shortcuts app from the App Store

During the show, we go through the Library and gallery tabs of the app, we download a shortcut from the gallery and even make our own basic shortcut with VoiceOver on.

iAccessibility has also created a shortcut and a category called Beyond the Gallery for shortcuts that are useful that aren’t in the gallery. Here is a link to the shortcut.

About Beyond The Gallery

Let us know what you think about the podcast by emailing feedback@iaccessibility.net, or by tweeting us at @iaccessibility1.

Beyond The Gallery: Convert Video to Audio

Shortcuts app icon

Sometimes you may just want a video to be converted to audio, or you might want to convert your stereo videos on your new iPhone XS or XS Max to audio because stereo recording is not supported yet in other apps, well you can now with this shortcut.

This shortcut takes input from your share sheet, Photos or iCloud Drive, and it will convert the selected video to an audio file which is .m4a, and save it to the location of your choosing.

Download Shortcut: Convert Video File To Audio

Beyond The Gallery: Speak Wi-Fi Network Shortcut

Shortcuts app icon

VoiceOver users have the luxury of being able to determine their Wi-Fi network from the status bar of their iPhone. This is not the case if you are a low vision user or a totally sighted user of iOS. To assist with this need, I have created a shortcut that will speak my Wi-Fi network if I am connected to one. All you have to do is add the shortcut to Siri and say something like, “Network Name,” and Siri will tell you what network you are connected to.

Download Shortcut: Speak WI-FI Network Name
