On this episode of the #iACast, Aleeha, Michael, Anna, Lauren, Scott and Chelsea discuss pre-NFB convention activities as well as your weekly dose of technology topics.

The news this week was full of merger talks and Windows 10 Insider news updates. They discussed the AT&T and Time Warner merger, Comcast and 21st Century Fox merger plans and the changes announced in the new build of Windows that came out this week. #iAcast 84 – Dealing With Changes In Technology

On this episode of the #iACast, Michael, Aleeha, Scott, Aaron, and Jason discuss the importance of dealing with and adapting to changes in technology.

We also discuss Apple and Microsoft Teaming up to help create new standards for Braille Displays, and the release of iOS 11.4 with AirPlay 2.

Scott’s pick is the Speedtest app by Ookla. This app is great for troubleshooting your internet connection, or just to see how fast your internet can go.

Aleeha’s pick is BeatStar, a Boppit style audiogame you can also find over at audio games.net.

Michael’s pick is the Current City app, arriving soon on the iOS App Store.

#iACast 83 – WWDC PreShow

On this episode of the #iACast, Allison, Jason, Aleeha, Scott and Michael discuss what we would like to see announced at Apple’s WWDC 2018.

In the news, we discussed a critical T-Mobile bug that allowed hackers to hijack users’ accounts. Another hack we talked about was the ability for Comcast routers to be exposed so that SSID’s and passwords could be compromised. For rumors, we discussed an article from AppleInsider suggesting delays on the shipment of Mac orders until June 6th, and rumors regarding Apple’s Project Star. We also discussed an article fromThe Verge asking if Apple will talk about its problems with the Butterfly keyboards on the Mac line. We also talked about issues using function keys in Windows on a Mac with touch bar. We ended by talking about issues experienced while trying to run Windows through Boot Camp after Apple switched to APFs.

Our featured Ad was Michael’s book, “Finding Success in the Digital Age through Problem Solving”, which is currently being written.

We discussed what we would like to see at WWDC from iOS 12, macOS 10.14, and watchOS 5. We also talked about hardware changes we’d like to see and the rumors that NFC might be unlocked on supported devices. We even touched on improvements we would like to see with Siri.

For this week’s picks, Aleeha talked about Timecrest. Jason told us about his Logitech Slim combo case with keyboard for 10.5 inch iPad Pro. Scott talked about one of his favorite food ordering Apps, Grubhub. Allison mentioned an app she was playing with multiple games, Dice World. #iACast 80 – Braille Talk

On this episode of the #iACast, Michael, Aleeha, Chelsea and Scott discuss the applications of Braille in their lives. Before we got to the main topic, we discussed the recent news that Sprint and T-Mobile will be merging pending DOJ approval. During our discussion of Braille, we discussed several resources, including iAccessibility’s own PocketBraille app for iOS, which will soon be receiving a major update to include Braille contractions. We also discuss the Hadley Braille course, offered by the Hadley School for the Blind, the National Reading Media Assessment for students, and our training program, which offers courses in Braille. We also discussed the transition to UEB, and how it is important to keep one’s skills up. Some of the Braille displays mentioned in this episode were the Focus 40, Braile Edge, Brailliant BI 32, Orbit Reader 20, and NeoBraille.

#iACast 76 #CSUNATC2018 Conference Wrap Up

In this episode of the iA Cast, Michael Jeff Bishop, Aleeha Dudley, Scott Van Gorp, Jason Earls, Chelsea Page, and Allison Hartley discuss what was covered at the CSUN Assistive Technology Conference for 2018.

Michael and Jeff discuss items that they found interesting at the exhibit hall.

  • Microsoft had all of their technology at their booth.
  • HP brought a new Printer to the conference with an add-on that allows for scanning and copying of documents with speech.
  • Irie-AT presented all new handheld magnifiers and a new Android app to assist low vision and blind users with phone use and magnification.
  • Aira.io showed off their new Horizon Glasses for their service.
  • HIMS released the BrailleSense Polaris Mini, a smaller Braille notetaker based on Android.
  • VFO Group had its Focus 40 fifth generation on display.
  • Google demonstrated their new devices which include the PixelBook, and Pixel devices with new Android technologies.
  • Amazon showed off their new locker technology that has accessibility included.

Some notable sessions included:

  • Google held sessions all week about their new technologies which include Android P.
  • Microsoft held sessions all week on their services
  • There were the standard Web accessibility sessions to talk about making sites on the web accessible.
  • Adobe taught classes on making PDFs accessible.
